Universal precautions are implemented when administering first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or any procedure where the potential for exposure to blood or any body fluid is present.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used by healthcare providers to protect themselves from injury or infection during first aid. PPE is part of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention’s Official Standard Precautions (also known as Universal Precautions) which healthcare providers must take when they risk exposure to body fluids. Body fluids include saliva, sweat, vomitus, tears, intestinal and urinary tract materials.
