Oral Medication for NICU
In this module, you will learn the principles and procedures involved in the safe and accurate administration of oral medications to neonates. The module covers:
- Purpose
- Preparation and equipment required
- Step-by-step procedure for oral administration
- Common clinical errors and their prevention
This module focuses on the special considerations required when administering medications to neonates, including their immature gastrointestinal system, sensitivity to dosage, and the need for precise measurement and timing. You will be trained in using appropriate tools such as calibrated droppers, oral syringes, and medicine cups, along with positioning techniques to ensure safety and effectiveness. The content emphasizes checking the six rights (right patient, right drug, right dose, right time, right route and right medication), preventing aspiration, and monitoring for adverse reactions. The module also guides you on how to handle medication refusal, vomited doses, and how to document accurately and communicate with caregivers. By the end of this module, nurses will be equipped to administer oral medications to neonates safely and effectively, minimizing risks and ensuring therapeutic outcomes.
