Identification and Management of Minor Disorders: Newborn
In this module, you will gain knowledge and practical skills to identify and manage common minor disorders in newborns that are usually self-limiting but require careful observation and appropriate nursing care. This module includes:
- Common minor disorders in newborns
- Signs and symptoms
- Steps for assessment and identification
- Basic management and parental guidance
- Common clinical errors and misconceptions
The module focuses on the recognition of frequently encountered minor conditions such as neonatal jaundice, erythema toxicum, milia, peeling skin, breast engorgement, umbilical cord stump issues, and transient tachypnea. Nurses will learn to distinguish between normal physiological variations and conditions that may require medical attention. It emphasizes the importance of parental reassurance, proper hygiene practices, safe skin care, and feeding support as part of routine newborn care. Nurses will also be trained in when to escalate care to a physician and how to educate caregivers for home management and follow-up. By the end of this module, you will be equipped to confidently identify minor disorders in newborns, provide timely and appropriate interventions, and support families in understanding and managing these common concerns.
