Identification of High-risk Newborn

In this module, nurses will gain essential knowledge and skills to identify high-risk newborns who require close monitoring, specialized care, and early interventions. The module covers the following key areas:

  • Purpose
  • Indications and risk factors
  • Assessment criteria
  • Steps for identification and initial stabilization
  • Common clinical errors in early recognition

This module emphasizes the importance of early identification of high-risk newborns to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality. Nurses will learn how to recognize risk factors such as prematurity, low birth weight, birth asphyxia, infections, congenital anomalies, and complications related to maternal health. Through structured clinical assessment, observation, and use of scoring tools, such as the Apgar score or risk stratification charts, nurses will develop the ability to classify and prioritize newborns for appropriate interventions. The module also includes communication protocols for timely referral and documentation of clinical findings. By the end of this module, nurses will be able to effectively screen and identify high-risk newborns, provide initial supportive care, and coordinate with the neonatal team to ensure timely and appropriate management.
