A number of factors contribute to an older adult’s quality of life but environmental factors play an important role in the quality of life of older adults who have difficulty maintaining physical, psychological, and social functioning. The study (by Roscoe Nicholson, 02 April 2018) shows four aspects for quality of life – social, physical, psychological, and environmental.
The social aspect covers personal relationships, social support, and sex life. The physical health aspect includes mobility, daily activities, functional capacity, energy, pain, and sleep. The psychological aspect includes self-image, negative thoughts, positive attitudes, self-esteem, and mental status. The environment aspect includes financial resources, safety, health and social services, living environment, opportunities to acquire new skills and knowledge, recreation, general environment (noise, air pollution, etc.), and transportation.
At the end of the lesson you will be able to understand:
- associations of environmental factors impacting the quality of life for the elderly
- effects of environmental factors in quality of life
- Lawton’s Theory of quality of life
- principles of health-related quality of life
- strategies of maintaining quality of life
