The primary survey is a crucial element to assess and to treat any life-threatening injuries quickly during the “initial assessment” of a seriously injured patient. The main causes of death in a trauma patient are airway obstruction, respiratory failure, shock from hemorrhage, and brain injuries. A patient is assessed and treatment priorities are established based on the injuries, the stability of the vital signs, and the injury mechanism. The patient’s vital functions must be assessed quickly and efficiently.
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand:
- Scene safety
- Initial assessment of a trauma patient
- ABCDE assessment approach
- Quick assessment of vital functions
