Most intensive care areas are separate for critically ill surgical patients, which is called a Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), which may include preoperative, postoperative, and post-trauma injury management. Critically ill surgical patients are at risk for pulmonary complications, including aspiration, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and acute lung injury. A critical care nurse must know the functions and operations of advanced monitoring devices, such as noninvasive ICP monitors, cerebral oximeters, BIS monitors, continuous transesophageal echo, noninvasive cardiac output monitors, and continuous end-tidal CO2 (carbon dioxide) to assist the intensivist.
