Patients who need IV fluids have a high degree of variability in terms of their current fluid and electrolyte status and their likely physiological responses to IV fluid therapy. Therefore, there is a need for a full assessment by a competent clinician of the best content, volume and rate of IV fluids to be given in order to minimize risks of:

  • Under- or over-provision of fluid and
  • Electrolyte abnormalities such as hypo- or hyper-natraemia, hypo- or hyper-kalaemia and hyperchloremic acidosis

Topics

  1. ABCDE (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure) Approach
  2. Vital Signs and Measurements
  3. Fluids and Electrolytes
