An emergency nurse should know the principles of triage which is the process of rapidly examining the sick/injured when they first arrive in order to place them in categories: EMERGENCY SIGNS who require immediate emergency treatment; PRIORITY SIGNS who should be given priority in the queue so they can be rapidly assessed and treated without delay; and NON-URGENT who have no emergency or priority signs. All patients should be checked on their arrival by an emergency nurse who is trained to assess how ill/injured they are. An emergency nurse decides whether a patient will be seen immediately and receive life-saving treatment, or will be seen soon.
