This chapter covers the standards for healthcare-associated infection prevention and control programs in an organization. The standards are documented and aim at reducing/eliminating infection risks to patients, visitors and providers of care. The standards encourage measures to be taken to prevent or reduce the risk of Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) of patients and employees. The standards focus on adequate resources and proper facilities to support the Infection Control Program. A hospital must have an infection control program which includes an action plan to control outbreaks of infection, disinfection/sterilization activities, biomedical waste (BMW) management, training of staff and employee health (immunization).
At the end of the lesson you will be able to understand:
- Hospital Infection Prevention and Control (HIC) program
- Infection Control Manual in all areas of a hospital
- Surveillance activities to capture and monitor infection prevention and control data
- Actions to prevent and control Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) of patients
- Resources for prevention and control of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI)
