Palliative care or end of life care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients during life-threatening illness through the prevention and relief of suffering by early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial measures. During this situation, a geriatric care nurse experiences the causes of death shift, the dying phase changes, and the last period of life extends to a long phase characterized by complicated treatment decisions, difficult symptom management, psychosocial problems and spiritual distress. Thus, In this time the necessity of hospice and palliative care, tailored to the needs and situations of the elderly is required by the nurse with regard to the growing number of people who live in residential care homes or assisted living facilities.
