An electrocardiogram is a tracing of electrical activity of the heart in a waveform. To understand the concept of ECG, it is very important that one should know the electrical conduction system of the heart where an electrical impulse travels from the sinoatrial node, spreads across the atrium, to the atrioventricular node and through the ventricular node of the heart. These electrical impulses cause the atrium and ventricles of the heart to repolarize and depolarize in a coordinated fashion. Studying these electrical impulses allows one to understand how an ECG machine captures this conduction system in waveform.

At the end of this lesson, you will  be able to understand:

  • Conduction system of the heart
  • Electrical physiology of the cardiac system
  • Presentation of electrical activity on an ECG graph
  • Concept of waveforms
