Basic Life Support is the prompt care of a patient who is experiencing a cardiac arrest, respiratory distress or an obstructed airway. An emergency nurse must have knowledge and skills in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and relieving airway obstructions to save a patient’s life. In addition to the physical skills necessary for providing BLS care, an emergency nurse must have critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and be able to work as part of a team to deliver the best care possible and to improve patient outcomes.
