To be effective with trauma victims in a hospital, it is essential that a nurse knows the safe and reliable methods for the immediate treatment of injured patients.

The basic knowledge necessary to assess a patient’s condition rapidly and accurately, to resuscitate and stabilize patients according to priority, to determine whether a patient’s needs exceed a facility’s resources and a provider capabilities, to arrange appropriately for a patient’s inter hospital transfer (what, who, when and how) and to ensure that optimal care is provided and that the level of care does not deteriorate at any point during the evaluation, resuscitation, or transfer process.

Educational Objectives 

  • Identify the nature of a specific  medical emergency and act accordingly
  • Enact the various roles for team work during trauma care
  • Demonstrate concepts and principles of primary and secondary patient assessments
  • Establish management priorities for trauma situations
  • Initiate primary and secondary management necessary within the golden hour for emergency management of acute life threatening conditions. 
  • Identify appropriate therapy of the five resuscitation scenarios based on the Advanced Trauma Care Nurse course by The Society of Trauma Nurses.
