Need:

Cancer is a major health problem worldwide and a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in all age groups, although a higher proportion of older people, in comparison to the other age groups. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally; about 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer. Meeting the supportive care needs of cancer patients remains a challenge for the cancer care systems around the world. Oncology nursing care can be defined as meeting the various needs of oncology patients during the time of their disease including appropriate screenings and other preventive practices, symptom management, care to retain normal functioning as possible, and supportive measures upon end of life.

 

Educational Objectives:

  • Assessment of cancer patients for their physical, psychological and spiritual needs
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how personal and professional attitudes, values and beliefs
  • Understand the role of the immune system and genetics involved with cancer
  • Participate in health education activities to promote cancer prevention
  • Describe the diagnosis and staging of cancer
  • Explain the principles and application of common treatment modalities
  • Explain the safe preparation and administration of chemotherapeutic agents
  • Administering, recording and disposing of chemotherapeutic drugs
  • Discuss the impact of cancer and its treatment on patients and their families
  • Assess the needs of patients and their families regarding their stress and coping mechanism
  • Contribute effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
