Transmission-based precautions are the basic infection control practices that are to be used along with standard precautions for patients who may be infected or colonized with certain infectious agents for which additional precautions are needed to prevent infection transmission.

Transmission-based precautions must be applied when patients with known infections, and asymptomatic patients who are suspected for colonisation or infection with an infectious microorganism.

Transmission-based precautions are categorized by the route of transmission of the infectious agent:

Contact Precautions: used for infections, diseases, or germs that are spread by touching the patient or items in the room.

Droplet Precautions: used for diseases or germs that are spread in tiny droplets caused by coughing and sneezing.

Airborne Precautions: used for diseases or very small germs that are spread through the air from one person to another.
