To age gracefully, the prevention and management of systemic diseases plays an important role. The most common systemic diseases causing morbidity and mortality in persons aged 65+ years are: diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, influenza, diabetes mellitus, renal diseases, and liver diseases. In geriatric care, it is important for a nurse to know about pre-existing disease(s) of the patient and must know the treatment and management of the disease(s). Geriatric nurses can improve the quality of life of this population and aid in the attainment of successful aging by taking proper care of systemic diseases.
