Intensive care units are specialized areas that provide critical care and life support for acutely ill and injured patients. The intensive care unit (ICU) is a potentially hostile environment for the vulnerable critically ill patient and also for the healthcare professional working in a critical care unit. The stressful factors are noise, ambient light, restriction of mobility, social isolation, and equipment which contribute to delirium. These conditions become more challenging with an increased length of stay.
