Management of critically ill obstetric patients in the ICU is very challenging because of unique maternal physiological adaptation, altered physiology, different normal ranges for laboratory and clinical parameters in pregnancy, and potentially harmful effects of drugs and interventions on the fetus and care of another indwelling life whose outcome is dependent upon the maternal well-being. A critical care nurse must understand to differentiate between medical and obstetric disorders with similar manifestations, identify organ dysfunction, assess maternal and fetal risk from continuing pregnancy, choose an appropriate mode of delivery if necessary, and optimize organ functions for a safe delivery.
